Seascapes are probably the easiest outdoor painting subject because a lot of the visual information can be quite repetitive. Once you learn the anatomy of the waves and the sea conditions you’re dealing with, you can create many variants of them in different settings.

Over the course of three days, this painting workshop will show you the principles and practices behind seascape painting en plein air (or “in the open air”), which includes related features such as the sky, water, sand, cliffs, headlands.

The workshop is divided between (1) theory and preparatory studies in studio, where you will learn basic concepts around composition, colour, and method, and (2) outdoor painting sessions at Annestown Beach and Boatstrand Harbour, where you will paint directly from the source, or alla prima.

  • Day 1   Theory & Practice in Studio, Preparatory Studies
  • Day 2   The Open Sea (at Annestown Beach)
  • Day 3   The Fishing Harbour (at Boatstrand)

You will learn an effective way of painting alla prima (or direct painting in one session) as well as how to produce a slower and more detailed version of the colour sketch.
