Introductory Talk (45 minutes)
The webinar begins with an overview of Monet’ life and career, covering topics such as his background, training and influences, his style and technique and how these evolved during his long career, his use of colour, his signature application of paint, and his preoccupation with water and nature.
Starting in the late 1890s, Monet spent the last three decades of his life working on the Water Lilies Cycle, inspired by the water garden that he created at his Giverny estate in Normandy.
Painting Demonstration (120 minutes)
The 2-hour painting demonstration will cover two of Monet’s works from the early and late 1890s. This demonstration will also show you how Monet used broken colour in combination with Michel Chevreul’s theory of colour and complementary colour schemes.
You will also learn about a range of other techniques that Monet employed in his oil paintings such as slabs of colour, two-dimensional brushwork, palette knife painting, impasto and the influence of Japanese art.
The technical information, such as pigment analysis and materials, in this demonstration painting have been have been analysed by the research departments at major art museums, and the reproduction in this demonstration is based on their findings.
