Introductory Talk (45 minutes)
The webinar begins with an overview of Degas’ life and career, covering topics such as his background, training and influences, his style and technique and how these evolved during his long career, his use of colour, his signature application of paint, his use of pastels, mixed media and other materials.
The 1880s marked a change in Degas’ style and medium, and we will be focusing on his use of a brighter colour palette which paralleled with his use of pastels.
Painting Demonstration (120 minutes)
You will have the opportunity to watch a 2-hour demonstration of one of his pastel paintings from the 1880s. This demonstration will also look at the materials and practices that Degas used, as well as trends and techniques of the late 19th century.
You will be shown a range of different techniques that Degas employed in his pastel works, such as drawing, his use of photographs, building layers of colour, protecting layers, stumping and blending.
The technical information, such as pigment analysis and materials, in this demonstration painting have been have been analysed by the research departments at major art museums, and the reproduction in this demonstration is based on their findings.
Live Q&A (15 minutes)
You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the painting demonstration and time will be allowed at the end of the webinar for a more detailed discussion and question and answer session.
