Impressionism has captured people’s imagination since its first exhibition in Paris in 1874, and artists have long sought to understand how the Impressionists created their paintings and how their techniques might be replicated. So whether you’re an artist who wishes to learn more about painting or an art-lover who would like to get a deeper insight into Impressionism, this webinar on Degas provides a wonderful opportunity to learn, explore and enjoy some of his most celebrated paintings!

Compared to the other Impressionists, Edgar DEGAS (1834-1917) was more of a traditionalist. He didn’t paint en plein air, his colour palette was subdued for much of his career, and his spontaneity was painstakingly rehearsed.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Degas’ eyesight started to decline in the 1870s, and by the 1890s he could barely see. He began using pastels more often for their instantaneous results and their matt, sketchy finish that contrasted with the glossy effect of oils.

With a fascination for human anatomy and a preoccupation with the ballet, both on stage and behind-the-scenes, Degas’ paintings reflect his love for rhythm, dance and movement.
