This July, I’m hosting three different summer workshops at Cahir Arts (and its environs) with something to suit every artist – from landscape and en plein air painting to classical and contemporary abstract painting, ranging from two, three and five days each.

Cahir Arts – gallery and studio – is located in the heart of Cahir, a town which boasts one of the finest Norman castles in Ireland, the enchanting Swiss Cottage, a beautiful and tranquil river walk, and a bustling and vibrant town centre, provides the perfect location for painting workshops.

CLASSICAL PAINTING

3-DAY WORKSHOP
4th – 6th July 2025

This workshop introduces you to the standard oil painting practices and techniques of the Old Masters as well as how contemporary artists employ them today. Over the course of three days, you will learn how to create complex, realistic and luminous paintings. You will learn many oil painting skills and techniques as well as solving many common painting problems.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING: En Plein Air & in studio

5-DAY WORKSHOP
14th – 18th July 2025

This 5-day summer workshop is divided between studio and outdoor painting. In studio, you will be prepared for your plein air painting sessions, learning theory and technique. En plein air, you will have an opportunity to paint directly from the motif. On the final day, you will be shown how to develop your plein air sketches into a more polished studio landscape painting.

All too often contemporary artists approach abstract painting with a belief that ‘anything goes.’ Yet, why do some abstract paintings work while others fail?
