This course comprises two 6-week modules, and there are two class time options, on Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons. Please see times and dates, and which Impressionist painters are covered in each module below.

Impressionism has captured people’s imagination since its first exhibition in Paris in 1874, and artists have long sought to understand how the Impressionists created their paintings and how their techniques might be replicated.
This course reveals the answers to these questions by assessing the techniques and styles of eight masters of Impressionism and showing how their methods can be used and adapted by artists today.
You will be shown how the Impressionist movement came about, explore its historical context, and define the styles and inspirations of the artists involved. We will then look at the main techniques including:
- Alla Prima
- Pointillism
- Impasto
- Two-dimensional brushwork
- Use of slabs of colour
- Palette knife application
- Impressionist use of colour
The paints, brushes and other materials and equipment they used will also be described, as well as modern-day materials and equivalents.
The heart of the course, however, focuses on eight of the major Impressionist painters – Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Pissarro, Morisot, Cassatt and Caillebotte – revealing how they worked and deconstructing many of their well-known paintings. In each case, you will be shown how to recreate these Impressionist masterworks with step-by-step demonstrations and study guides.
This course combines a fascinating insight into the working methods of the Impressionists with practical guidelines to enable contemporary artists to achieve their own Impressionist paintings.

MODULE 1 (September – October) Class Times:
- Option 1: Saturdays 2-4pm from 14th September to 19th October 2024
- Option 2: Wednesdays 7-9pm from 18th September to 23rd October 2024
MODULE 2 (November – December) Class Times:
- Option 1: Wednesday 7-9pm from 13th November – 18th December 2024
- Option 2: Saturday 2-4pm from 16th November – 21st December 2024
You can complete this course using either oil or acrylic paint. Our study of Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt allows the option of working in pastels if you wish, or you can continue to work in oil or acrylic.
Course Outline
Each week, you will learn the individual style and techniques of one of the Impressionist masters by copying one or two of their paintings, as well as covering general painting topics. Below is the week-by-week outline for each module:

Painting Techniques
We will examine all of the Impressionists painting techniques including:
- Alla Prima
- Use of Slabs of Colour
- Pointillism
- Impasto
- Palette Knife Painting
- Textured Brushwork
- Influence of Japanese Art
- Use of Photography
Colour
The basis of all Impressionist painting was the representation of colour and light. This was more accessible for them than previous painters because, after centuries of innovation, suddenly a new explosion of pigments was available. Favourite colours included Emerald Green, artificial Ultramarine, Chrome Yellow, Chrome Orange, Cadmium Yellow and Viridian. The Impressionists mixed colour directly on the canvas or placed hues next to each other, which allowed viewers’ eyes to mix them – a technique known as ‘optical colour mixing.’
Materials
The Impressionists lived in an age of great social change as well as radical technical innovation. We will look at the changes to materials and equipment that enabled the Impressionists to create their ground-breaking paintings.
The pigments and materials of the paintings we will study have been analysed by the research departments of major art museums, and we will be basing our painting reproductions on their findings.
