Unit 1 Introduction
Impressionism is not easily defined, and there are many contradictions and controversies within it. I will address some of these points and also provide some background and historical context for this art movement.
The Impressionists lived in an age of great social change as well as radical technical innovation. We will look at the changes to materials and equipment that enabled the Impressionists to create their ground-breaking paintings, and then look at what materials we will be using.

Unit 2 Content & Composition
The Impressionists’ use and priority of colour warrants a preliminary introduction to this subject, learning colour theory and mixing, colour palettes and schemes, colour strategies and harmony, and much more. Different Impressionist painters took a range of approaches to starting a painting. We will look at their compositional practices as well as the themes and subject matter that inspired them.
