Tourin House & Gardens 3-Day Plein Air Painting Workshop

3-Day Summer Workshop
7 – 9 JULY 2023
Tourin House & Gardens, Cappoquin, County Waterford

Time: 10am – 5pm each day
Medium: Oil, Acrylic or Watercolour
Level: Intermediate – Advanced (painting experience in your medium is required)

This 3-day summer workshop provides a comprehensive guide to landscape painting en plein air (or ‘in the open air’). The study of landscape painting should begin at the source: outdoors, with nature itself. Only in this experiential relationship with nature can you expect to learn how landscape forms and colours translate into paint.

Situated on the banks of the river Blackwater with a fine view of the Knockmealdown Mountains to the north, Tourin House is surrounded by arable land and a fifteen acre garden with mature broad-leaved trees and a fine collection of shrubs and plants. An Italianate style villa with classical proportions, Tourin House is home to the Jameson family, of Irish Whiskey fame.

Using the alla prima method – completing each painting in just one session – you will be shown how to create strong and unified compositions and how to capture light, colour, form and texture with immediacy and speed. Some of the key learning outcomes include:

  • Composition, picture plane dynamics and scene selection: identifying visual cues that will ensure a successful painting composition
  • Simplifying and massing the many complex shapes, forms and textures in nature
  • Emphasising the primary importance of value and tonal relationships
  • Mastering light and colour: how to mix realistic as well as expressive colours, and organising and harmonising them on your palette and canvas
  • Understanding different surfaces and the effects of light and atmosphere on them

You will also be shown many important oil, acrylic and watercolour painting skills and techniques, including brushwork, washes, blending, edges and transitions, and many other tips to help you avoid the most common pitfalls in painting.

Refreshments, tea, and coffee will be provided for break and lunch each day, but you will need to bring your own packed lunch. Alternatively, you can find some nice cafés in Cappoquin village, which is 5km away.
