This 5-week online course introduces you to the essential materials, methods and techniques of watercolour painting. You will learn fundamental artistic concepts about colour, light, form and texture, as well as being introduced to various watercolour techniques.
Starting with sketching, dry-brush techniques and the application of different washes, you will then be shown how to approach tone and form. You will also learn how to set up your palette and capture colour, light and transparency. I will explain what materials are best to work with and demonstrate how to use them. Students will receive individual critiques and practical advice at all stages of their watercolour painting process.
We will look at Old Master water-media paintings to gain inspiration, not only because their work is beautiful, but also to gain insight into how they executed more complicated techniques.
You will learn:
- How to mix colours effectively
- Colour theory, biases of primaries, transparencies and opacities of paint colours
- Developing colour harmony by working with a limited palette
- Brushes and brushmarks
- Guide to paper: surface, weight and type
- How to prepare and stretch watercolour paper
- Painting terms
Each class will include many demonstrations, guiding you in detail through the painting process, interaction and discussion about the oil painting method and techniques, and practical exercises which can be submitted by email for individual appraisal.
Requirements
This course is aimed at beginner and intermediate watercolour artists, or anyone who is interested in improving their watercolour techniques and practices. You will need the following materials and resources in order to do this course:

They must be relevant to the course and should focus on issues that cannot be readily discussed, explained, or viewed by email. You can submit your completed weekly assignments or progress, and discuss any questions by email.

Print-outs and study notes will be made available on Google Drive week-by-week, so that you can access them at any time. You will be given a link to the Google cloud, which will only be accessible for the duration of the course. Please make sure to download all of the study notes before the end of the course.
